Generally a computer warranty covers faulty hardware in a machine and nothing more, however it may still not be easy for many computer owners to understand what is covered.
In this article, we explain the basics of our warranties and what may or may not be covered
It is important to keep in mind that, fundamentally, UBT passes on the warranty offered by our suppliers - all warranties are subject to the specific terms and conditions, exclusions, criteria etc. The info given below is a guideline for what may normally be covered but does not form any guarantee of a specific claim being accepted.
In most cases, the warranty is a 24 month warranty. There may be specific exclusions or partial exclusions from this.
Warranty normally covers things like;
- CD drive stops working
- Hard drive fails (except if this is due to shock, impact etc)
- Charger stops working
- Power supply failure
- Motherboard failure
- Memory failure (RAM)
- Screen (if not an impact from outside)
- Battery (for example - if capacity is significantly decreased more than expected aging)
The Warranty does NOT cover;
- Loss of data - your data is your responsibility at all times - if you fail to safeguard your data, you run the risk of losing it. Our techs will do their utmost to give you a good outcome, but ultimately your data is yours, and the risk is yours.
- Data Recovery - it is your responsibility to ensure data is backed up, data recovery is not covered under warranty.
- Physical Damage - if your machine is damaged, you may be able to claim insurance to cover this, but the warranty does not normally cover damage. Common damage includes; water/fluid spillage, impact damage (dropped, hit etc), screen breakage due to mis-handling, dislodging of ports or sockets through excessive force, damaged ports through incorrect plugs being inserted.
- Damage caused by over-voltage or power surges are not covered – insurance may cover this.
- Modifications made after purchase - if you have made changes to the machine hardware - these parts will not be covered. In many cases, modification may specifically void the machine warranty.
- Software - programs, including software that may have been supplied or purchased with the machine, are not covered under warranty. In theory, this includes the machine operating system, so faults and repairs to this are not covered - however in some cases (hard drive failure) the Operating System will be reinstalled on new hardware under warranty. Warranty does NOT cover problems or faults with any software installed on the machine. It also does not cover reinstallation of programs if a warranty repair includes resetting the machine.
- Streamline3 or ESET software issues - these are not part of the machine warranty - Streamline3 and ESET anti-virus are covered under our System and Software License.
- Freight into our workshop is not covered under warranty.
Other Warranty Notes;
- Our warranty is a 'back to base' warranty - we MAY attempt remote repairs where applicable, but ultimately we may insist that the machine be returned to our workshop or to a supplier.
- If repairs that are not covered by warranty are required to complete a warranty repair, you will be charged for the non-warranty part of the repair.
- The supplier has the option to repair or replace a machine at their discretion.
- Warranty repairs may require the faulty components to be sent to the manufacturer/supplier for assessment or testing - this may include a harddrive or other component containing data - these are normally not returned and a full backup (where possible) will be required beforehand.
